Ao Nang Beach

Ao Nang is Krabi's most developed beach resort — a long, gently curving bay fringed by the same dramatic limestone karst towers that characterise the entire province, but with the full infrastructure of a tourist town: beachfront restaurants serving fresh seafood grills at sunset, dive shops, longtail boat piers for island-hopping excursions, accommodation ranging from backpacker guesthouses to luxury cliff-top villas, and a lively evening strip of bars and massage parlours behind the beachfront road.

The beach itself stretches roughly 2 kilometres, with soft sand best at the northern end away from the longtail boat operations. The water is generally calm during the November–April high season. Ao Nang faces west, which means the sunsets are reliably spectacular: limestone towers silhouetted against orange and pink skies, with longtail boats returning from their island routes making the silhouettes even more cinematic.

Ao Nang's primary value is as a base. The longtail pier connects to Railay Beach (15 minutes), and speedboat tours depart daily for Ko Phi Phi, Maya Bay, the Four Islands (Ko Mook, Ko Kradan, Ko Chueak, Ko Ngai), and the mangrove kayaking tours of Ao Thalane. A full-day Four Islands snorkelling tour costs 500–800 THB per person with reputable operators.

Getting there: Krabi International Airport is 40 minutes by minivan or taxi from Ao Nang (600–800 THB by taxi, 150 THB by shared minivan). Minivans also connect to Phuket (3 hours) and Ko Samui (via ferry). Best time to visit: November–April; the bay can be rough and some tours suspended May–October.
